Who Could Benefit from the EVAHEART?

According to the American Heart Association, heart failure currently affects over 5.8 million American people, with about 670,000 new cases per year. 1

‘Heart failure’ refers to a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the body.  Blood supplies nutrients and oxygen to the body and is vital for a person’s health and survival.  Heart failure usually progresses slowly over time with increasing symptoms.  Causes may include damage due to a heart attack, long term high blood pressure, infection, or other injury to the heart.2

The EVAHEART Left Ventricular Assist system (LVAS) has been developed to support people diagnosed with left-sided, or left ventricular, heart failure by providing a blood pump that assists the left ventricle.  Proper function of the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart, is necessary to supply blood to all of the body.

The EVAHEART LVAS is designed to be durable.  As of January 5, 2011, the average duration of support in patients from the Japanese clinical trial is 965 days, with no replacements of the Blood Pump.  No pump failures have been seen in either clinical or bench testing in 5+ years of testing.
