Frequently Asked Questions
- What does the EVAHEART look like? Do I have to carry anything?
The EVAHEART Blood Pump is about the size of a tennis ball, and is made of pure titanium. It will be implanted in the chest just below the heart. The pump is connected by a driveline to a controller that is carried along with batteries and an Emergency Controller. These items are all stored in a specially designed carrying bag, which can be carried or pulled on a cart.
- Is it noisy?
By design, centrifugal pumps are quiet, and do not produce any noticeable noise.
- What must I do to maintain the system?
Management consists of checking the Controller (connectors, power sources, and alarms), charging batteries and changing the dressing on the driveline exit site.
- How long can the EVAHEART LVAS operate? How long will I be on the EVAHEART?
The EVAHEART LVAS has been designed to support a patient for many years with routine maintenance. In the Japanese clinical trial, most patients were supported for over two years while they awaited a transplant. Your time on the EVAHEART LVAS will depend on your specific medical condition and your status on the organ transplant waiting list.
- When can I go home with the EVAHEART?
Once you recover from the implant surgery, your doctor will determine when you can be discharged to home to await transplantation. Typically, you have to return to the hospital for a monthly checkup.
- Can I eat normally while supported by the EVAHEART LVAS?
As instructed by your doctor, you should expect to maintain a healthy diet which will play a key role in recovery and continued health. You can expect some discomfort until you recover from the surgery.
- Will I be able to exercise?
Talk with your physician about the types of exercise that would be best for you. For safety and proper function of the EVAHEART LVAS, running, jogging, participation in contact sports or any activity that poses a risk of falling or injury should be avoided. It is also important to avoid swimming, water sports and any activity that could pose a risk of the Controller getting wet.
- Can I shower or bathe?
Once you have healed from surgery, your physician will discuss the issue of showering. DO NOT take a bath or sit in a hot tub or sauna.
- How much will this cost?
As an investigational device, prices are reduced to cover manufacturing costs. The hospital will make arrangements for payment through your insurance provider.
