Sun Medical Technology Research Corporation

Sun Medical Technology Research Corporation (or “Sun Medical”, www.evaheart.co.jp) is located in Suwa City, in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan. The Company was established on April 8, 1991 to develop and commercialize a concept for a Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS) conceived by a cardiothoracic surgeon at Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Dr. Kenji Yamazaki. Using private and some government funds, Sun Medical developed the EVAHEART LVAS and in this process established collaborations with several universities including Wasada University, Tohoku University, Tokyo Women’s Medical University and the University of Pittsburgh. Arriving at a final clinical design in 2002, the Company completed final verification testing and, in 2005, initiated a clinical trial in Japan. The first-in-human use of the EVAHEART LVAS occurred at Tokyo Women’s Medical University on May 7, 2005. The Company completed the clinical trial consisting of 18 patients in 2008 and is working with the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) to gain commercial approval of the device in Japan. Sun Medical will provide the EVAHEART LVAS to EVAHEART MEDICAL USA, Inc. for use in North America and EVAHEART MEDICAL INTERNATIONAL, Inc. for use worldwide.
